Mathematics
‘The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.’

At Newlands Spring Primary and Nursery School we believe that all children are capable of understanding and doing mathematics given sufficient time. We follow the White Rose approach as the basis for our Mathematics curriculum.
This approach is centred around the principle of Maths Mastery. It places an emphasis on developing children’s number skills and encouraging children to deepen and master their learning on one objective before moving on. Within this scheme children have a much longer block of time to access each area of mathematics and will be able to apply what they have learnt to other mathematical areas throughout the year. The children are encouraged to practice and develop their competency within each area, reason and talk about their maths and use and apply what they have learnt to other mathematical areas throughout the year.

Why is Maths Mastery important?
All children need a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning so that:
- future mathematical learning is built on solid foundations which do not need to be re-taught;
- there is no need for separate catch-up programmes due to some children falling behind;
- the children are better equipped to keep up with their peers, leading to gaps in attainment being narrowed whilst the attainment of all is raised.
Mastery of the key mathematical concepts and techniques will enhance understanding, enjoyment and achievement for every child.
You can continue to support your child by supporting them to practise and communicate their knowledge of number bonds, times tables, knowledge of place value and their understanding of shape.
