School Dinners

Newlands Spring Primary and Nursery School is a healthy school, committed to providing good quality nutritional home cooked meals for all our children. All our food is cooked daily, in our newly refurbished school kitchen, using fresh ingredients bought from local suppliers.

Menus are varied to cater for all tastes, with a meat and vegetarian option available daily. The menus are cooked on a 3 weekly menu cycle and meals are ordered on a daily basis and cost £2.60 per day. Meals should be paid preferably on-line or by cash/cheque in advance.

Every meal served at Newlands Spring Primary and Nursery School is fully nutritionally monitored and meets the Government Food and Nutritional Based Standards.

The catering team have recently been re-awarded with the 5 Star Award for Excellent Food and Hygiene Standards.

Universal Free School Meals (UIFSM)

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a Universal Infant Free School Meal (UIFSM). This offer does not depend on your household income or whether you receive any benefits, every child in these year groups is eligible to take up the offer.

Being entitled to UIFSM does not necessarily mean you are entitled to support available during school holidays or in the event of school closures, that support is based on whether you are eligible for FSM. Parents and Guardians can check their eligibility for FSM online via the LGfL Free School Meal Eligibility Checker

Free School Meals (FSM)

If you can’t afford school dinners you may be eligible for free school meals. To be eligible you must be receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Income support or income-based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit with an annual taxable income of less than £16,190
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Parents and Guardians can check their eligibility online via the LGfL Free School Meal  Eligibility Checker. A Certificate of Eligibility is available through the website for any child eligible for a free school meal attending the school. This Certificate of Eligibility should be taken to the school, along with any supporting evidence, and the school will register your claim for  Free School Meals.

If you are eligible for free school meals and your circumstances change in any way (such as changing address or school, and registering another child) you will need to notify the school.

Healthy Eating

Many children choose to bring a packed lunch and we encourage these to be as healthy as possible. Fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolate are not allowed in packed lunches. For the safety of children with allergies products containing nuts are not allowed in packed lunches.

We encourage children to bring a bottle of water to school each day and we have installed cold water dispensers around the school. Part of the cost of these is donated to AquaAid.

At morning play every infant child is given a free piece of fruit or vegetable and junior children are welcome to bring their own piece of fruit or vegetable. The remains of these snacks are composted by our eco-monitors
